Meet the team – Erin Benison

What role did you initially apply for at Peterson?

I started my career with Peterson in June 2024 after graduating from university with a BSc degree in Medical Science. I initially applied through the apprenticeship programme as I was interested in the industry and thought it sounded like a great opportunity but ended up being offered a full-time graduate position as Sustainability Trainee. I have since been promoted to Sustainability Coordinator and am now responsible for managing the Energy Management System at Peterson and the Greenhouse Gas emissions accounting process.

Since joining Peterson, I have been given every opportunity to learn and grow both through training and gaining experience.”

What does your current role involve?

As Sustainability Coordinator, I advise on strategies for the business to reduce its Greenhouse Gas emissions and achieve net zero in accordance with legislation and science-based targets, as well as managing the audit process for our Energy Management System and carbon neutrality process to ensure we are continually improving. It’s been a great chance to gain exposure to new areas of technology and software, and I’ve been able to expand on my data analysis knowledge by handing large volumes of data and conveying its meaning both to others in the business and external clients.

What have you enjoyed most about your time at Peterson so far?

Honestly, the people. Since joining Peterson, I have been given every opportunity to learn and grow both through training and gaining experience, all of which has been made possible by the people I work with. Their encouragement and willingness to teach has made my job all the more exciting.

A particular highlight was achieving the ISO 14068 Carbon Neutrality standard. Five months after I joined, we were set the bold challenge of becoming the first energy logistics company to achieve carbon neutrality, and I was really proud to be part of the team to do this. After months of hard work, we were successful, and this was a great learning curve for me in how our business operates.

What are your next steps within Peterson?

Over the next few years, I hope to continue fostering a culture of sustainability within Peterson and implement new initiatives and projects to drive a low carbon future. I would love to explore all areas of the business to develop a more well-rounded view of our operations, allowing me to aid in the development of new strategies to ensure we are the first company of our kind to reach net zero.

I am also really keen to explore the project management side of the business. I do my best work when making plans and find satisfaction in taking a project from beginning to end.

What advice would you give to someone starting their career at Peterson?

Take every opportunity presented to you, whether it be visiting sites, training or sitting in on meetings. What truly sets Peterson apart is its people who will encourage your development and challenge you to reach your full potential.
